Overview 

The University of Manitoba Students’ Union (UMSU) was first established in 1919 and incorporated through the act by the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba in 1975. It is unique among student governments in Canada that are typically incorporated under existing provincial legislation governing non-profits3, and it’s not the only quirk of UMSU. The Union runs some uncommon services, reflecting the unique needs and aspirations of its students. The union’s representation and advocacy fronts need improvement. While it does regulate and provide support services to student clubs, a number of factors (including commuter campus culture, lack of clubs, etc.) pose challenges for its extracurricular political economy.
